Optima Tax Relief’s Chief Tax Officer and Lead Tax Attorney, Phil, explains what’s “On TAP” for taxpayers this year—and no, he’s not talking about drinks. TAP stands for the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, a Federal Advisory Committee to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), that serves as the voice of taxpayers by providing recommendations to improve the IRS experience.
This year, Phil is serving as the National Chair of the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, and the organization has just released its 2025 Annual Report, featuring 188 recommendations from taxpayers nationwide aimed at improving IRS processes and services.
More Online Resources for Taxpayers
One major focus of this year’s report is expanding the amount of information and tools available online. The goal is to make it easier for taxpayers to find answers, access resources, and navigate tax season more efficiently.
Improved IRS Chatbot Support
Another recommendation centers on improving IRS digital tools and virtual assistance. During busy filing periods, faster and more reliable online support options could help taxpayers get answers to common questions without long wait times.
Clearer IRS Notices and Letters
One of the most requested improvements from taxpayers is simpler communication from the IRS. The report highlights the need for plain and clear language in IRS letters and notices so taxpayers can better understand what the IRS is asking for and what steps they need to take.
Your Voice Matters
The Taxpayer Advocacy Panel relies on feedback from everyday taxpayers to help shape future recommendations. If you have ideas for improving the taxpayer experience, now is the time to speak up and help influence future changes.
